Thomas didn’t want to see it – but did.
In the light of the setting sun, a pair of black eyes glinted back at him.
It wasn’t an animal.
No animal stood erect like that on two legs. It couldn’t have been, as the eyes were at least six feet off the leaf covered ground.
And was there a smile?
He thought there was.
He was sure there was!
A widening smile of razor-sharp teeth that couldn’t possibly fit in one mouth, glinted in the dusky light.
Thomas lurched back forward; his clipped steps quickening into a run.
Behind him, Thomas heard the soft whoosh as branches separated and fell back into place, and then, behind him, and getting closer, a louder set of footfalls punctuated the air.
Funny, he thought that, as he couldn’t hear his own steps yet, the ones behind him were clearly in determined pursuit. The approaching crunch of gravel grew louder and were soon layered with the deep rasping breaths of his pursuer.
He could vaguely here a voice.
“Thomas. Young Thomas. I come bearing gifts.”

Emmitsville was built on rot. Now it’s coming back up through the floorboards.
It begins with an act of violence no one wants to explain—and it doesn’t stop. Bodies follow. Some broken. Some burned. Some left in ways that defy reason and choke the town with fear. What looks like madness, accident, or suicide is something far worse: a reckoning.
An old force, born of power, resentment, buried crimes, and ideology has risen from the town’s past. It moves unseen. It feeds on rage, grief, and denial. And it doesn’t kill cleanly. It punishes. It’s testing limits. Choosing vessels. And deciding how much suffering will finally be enough.
Retribution is a savage supernatural horror novel where vengeance replaces justice, silence becomes complicity, and evil doesn’t knock—it takes what it’s owed. The question isn’t whether the town will survive.
It’s what will be left when the accounting is done.
