The Story
It does not arrive with violence.
It arrives the way a season does — perceptible only in accumulation, in the quality of light, in the way people of Twin Falls begin, almost imperceptibly, to change.
Not their faces.
Not their habits.
Something deeper and harder to name: the thing behind their eyes that used to be uncertain, used to be afraid, used to be alive in the way that fear makes a person alive.
It finds them in their private moments — the 3 a.m. spirals, the grief no one has been told about, the small shames they return to like a tongue finding a sore tooth. It speaks to them there, in their own voice, with their own cadence and their own particular logic. It does not lie, exactly. It simply completes the sentences they were already thinking. By the time they notice, the thoughts feel native. Inevitable.
Theirs.
It cannot be seen. Not by the living, not by the changed — by no one except those it has chosen to use. To those, it reveals itself deliberately: a projection of something terrible, a vision meant not to attract but to compel. It does not seduce its instruments. It conscripts them. What they are shown is enough to ensure cooperation.
When someone in Twin Falls is dying, it is there. Not because it led them to that moment — but because that is where the food is. At the bedside, in the emergency room corridor, in the car on the side of the road. It wears the shape of the dying because it is feeding then, ravenously, on what the moment produces: the despair of those watching, the fear of the one who is going. No one else in the room can see it. It moves through grief the way heat moves through a house — invisible, total, leaving everything changed.
What it takes, it uses. Fear becomes fuel. Death — the town's deaths, the region's, the slow attrition of everything small and loved — becomes sustenance. The changed do not suffer. That is the most terrible thing about them. They are calm in a way the living are not, because they have been relieved of the burden of being afraid to lose.
The Ripening is a novel about the horror that wears your own face — and the question of whether, once it has spoken long enough in your voice, there is any difference left worth fighting for.

Seasonally. Quietly. Into Twin Falls the way weather moves in — felt before it is named, accepted before it is understood. It finds the open doors first: grief, exhaustion, the fear people carry alone and never say aloud.

The Invisible
No one sees it — except those it has chosen to use. To them it projects something terrible: not to attract, but to conscript. To everyone else in the room, there is only a person dying and the people who love them. It feeds on both, unseen, at the exact moment the fear is sharpest.

Your Own Voice
Once close enough, it speaks — not as itself, but as you. It finishes your sentences. It agrees with your worst suspicions in exactly the tone you use when you're being honest. By the time you recognize it .... it has already been speaking for weeks.

The Story

1. Often an act of punishment for a wrong or criminal act.

Sometimes this act is exacted by a non-legal authority.

2. Often the very act of retribution itself becomes the wrong or criminal act for which others reciprocally wish to exact retribution.

And the cycle ... continues.

Something is wrong with Emmitsville.
But then, the timber that arrived at the Emittsville mill was already wrong.
It was denser than it should have been.
It was shot through with a grain that ran in patterns for which no forester could account.
The mill workers had subconsciously learned not to look at the dark patterns too long, not to trace with a finger, in the idle moments between shifts, not to describe to their wives, when they came home quieter than when they had left.
But it wasn’t just lumber.
Something – else – had come down with the logs.
What ultimately surfaced with the logs is a question nobody in Emittsville has ever been willing to finish asking.
An uneasiness begins to spread.
One could sense it in the air.
One could feel it in the dark shadows of trees.
Is it harder to breathe?
Sometimes it's better to stay inside, because sometimes, you can sense it in the small town folk that wander the streets.
You can feel it in the surrounding forest.
It's a malevolence that is poisoning the earth ...
... and now it’s coming back through the floorboards.
Yes, something ... is very wrong about Emittsville.
What followed was not an outbreak. It was not a contagion.
It was not anything the vocabulary of the time had been built to contain or describe.
But death came quickly and too easily to the town.
It begins with an act of violence no one wants to explain --
-- and it doesn’t stop.
Some bodies are broken.
Some are burned.
Some ... left in ways that defy reason and choke the town with fear.
What looks like madness, accident, or suicide is something far worse ... it's a reckoning.
An old force, born of power, resentment, buried crimes, and ideology has risen from the town’s past.
It moves unseen.
It feeds on rage, grief, and denial.
And it doesn’t kill cleanly.
It punishes.
It’s testing limits.
Choosing vessels.
Deciding how much suffering will finally be enough.
Retribution is a savage supernatural horror novel where vengeance replaces justice.
